Description

The Austin Air HealthMate pulls air in through all four sides of a steel cabinet, past two pre-filters and more than 780 cubic inches of activated carbon and zeolite, and through 60 square feet of medical grade HEPA material. One filter, replaced about every five years, covering up to 1,500 square feet.

Most air purifiers are plastic boxes built around a thin filter you replace every six months. This one is a 47 pound steel cabinet built around a single deep canister, and the difference shows up in two places: how much carbon it holds, and how rarely you think about it. The perforated intake means it does not need to face the room a particular way, and the three speed fan means it can sit quietly in a bedroom overnight or work hard in a living room by day.

Highlights

  • Four stages in one canister: a large particle pre-filter for dust, hair and pet dander, a medium particle pre-filter for mould spores and pollen, the carbon and zeolite bed, then the HEPA
  • Over 780 cubic inches of activated carbon and zeolite, around 15 pounds of it, which is what handles smoke, cooking odours, VOCs and chemical smells rather than just particles
  • 60 square feet of HEPA material, certified to capture 99.97 percent of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns and 99 percent down to 0.1 microns
  • Filter life of about five years in normal residential use, so no six-month cartridge habit and no subscription
  • Coverage up to 1,500 square feet with airflow up to 400 CFM on a three speed fan, running between roughly 40 and 66 decibels
  • 360 degree perforated steel intake on caster wheels, so it draws from every side and rolls between rooms rather than being carried
  • No ozone emission, and certified to CSA, NRTL, CE and California ARB, which is the standard that matters if you are comparing against ionisers
  • Five year mechanical warranty and five year pro-rated filter warranty, handcrafted in Buffalo, New York

Who it's for

  • Households dealing with smoke, cooking smells, VOCs or chemical odours, where a particle-only filter does not go far enough
  • Anyone who wants to buy an air purifier once and not manage it, rather than replacing cartridges twice a year
  • Large open rooms, or a main living space where one machine is expected to do the work of several

Two things to be clear about. It is not discreet: 47 pounds, 23 inches tall, and it looks like equipment rather than decor. It does come on caster wheels, so moving it between rooms is a push rather than a lift, but most people put it where it works rather than where it looks best. And the filter is a single sealed canister, so at five years you replace the whole thing rather than a cheap insert. That is a real cost to plan for, and it is the trade for the carbon capacity and the long interval.

Living with it

Day to day, nothing. Pick a fan speed and leave it. There is no app, no schedule to build and no sensor to second-guess.

Then periodically, vacuum the perforated housing so the intake stays clear, and consider a slip-on pre-filter if you have pets or a lot of dust: it catches the coarse material before it loads the main canister and can meaningfully extend its life.

FAQs

  • How often do I replace the filter, and is that the only one?
One canister, about five years in normal residential use. Everything happens inside it: both pre-filter layers, the carbon and zeolite bed, and the HEPA. So no monthly cartridge and nothing to subscribe to, but when it is due you replace the whole canister. Worth budgeting for.
  • What does the carbon and zeolite actually do?
HEPA captures particles. It does nothing about gases, and smoke, cooking smells, VOCs and chemical odours are gases. That is what the carbon and zeolite are for, and the volume is the point: a thin carbon-coated sheet in a cheaper machine saturates in weeks. This is a deep bed.
  • How big a room will it handle?
Up to 1,500 square feet, with airflow to 400 CFM. In practice one machine in a main living area does more than several small ones scattered about, because it moves enough air to actually turn the room over.
  • Is it quiet enough for a bedroom?
On low, yes, around 40 decibels, comparable to a quiet fan. On high it is closer to 66 and audible. Many owners run it high during the day and low overnight.
  • Does it need to face the room a certain way?
No. The housing is perforated all the way around, so it draws from every side. You need a bit of space around it, not a clear front, and it sits on caster wheels so repositioning it is easy.
  • Does it produce ozone?
No. It is a mechanical filter with a fan, so there is nothing generating ozone, and it holds California ARB certification along with CSA, NRTL and CE. That is worth checking on any air purifier you compare it against, because ionisers and some UV machines do emit ozone.
  • What does the HEPA rating mean?
The HEPA material is certified to capture 99.97 percent of airborne particles at 0.3 microns and 99 percent at 0.1 microns. The 0.1 micron figure is the more useful one, because much of what is in household air is smaller than 0.3 microns and many machines are not rated that far down.
  • What is the warranty, and can you service it?
Five years mechanical and five years pro-rated on the filter. We have a Richmond Hill showroom and our own repair department, so if anything needs sorting there is somewhere local to call rather than a support line in another country. Reach us at 1-877-220-5656.
