How to Measure Your Central Vacuum Hose

Ordering the wrong length or the wrong end fitting is the most common reason a hose gets sent back. Two measurements settle it every time: the overall length and the diameter of the cuff that plugs into your wall inlet.

1. Measure the length: run a flexible tape measure along the hose's actual path from the wall inlet to where you hold the handle, add 3 to 5 feet for slack around furniture and stairs, then round up to the nearest stocked length: 30, 35, 40 or 50 feet.

2. Check the end fitting: look inside the cuff that plugs into the wall inlet. Two flat metal pins mean a low-voltage 2-way switch hose, three pins mean a high-voltage 3-way switch hose, and no pins mean a straight air hose with no power head attached.

3. Measure the cuff diameter: wrap the tape around the outside of the end cuff or measure straight across its opening. Central vacuum hoses come in two standard sizes, 1 1/4 inch and 1 3/8 inch, and the cuff has to match your existing wall inlet and power head.

4. Match it to a kit if you need one: if you're replacing a hose that came with a power head, choose a kit at the same length rather than a bare hose, so the switch wiring and handle grip line up with what you already have.
