Description
The Austin Air HealthMate Plus carries up to 15 pounds of activated carbon, potassium iodide impregnated carbon and mineral granules, which is what lets it work on formaldehyde, benzenes and VOCs rather than just smells. Same steel cabinet, same 60 square feet of HEPA, same five year filter.
The Plus is not a bigger machine. It is the same 47 pound cabinet with a different chemistry inside the filter. Ordinary activated carbon handles odours well and gases unevenly; treating some of that carbon with potassium iodide changes what it will hold onto, and formaldehyde is the usual example because it is small, common and stubborn. If your air problem is a smell you want gone, the standard machine is enough. If your air problem is a renovation, new cabinetry, a garage under the living room or a summer of wildfire smoke, this is the one built for it.
Highlights
- Potassium iodide impregnated carbon in the blend, which Austin specifies for formaldehyde, benzenes, VOCs, chemicals, gases and odours
- Up to 15 pounds of filtration media, over 780 cubic inches of activated carbon, treated carbon and mineral granules, so the bed lasts rather than saturating in weeks
- 60 square feet of HEPA material, certified to capture 99.97 percent of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns and 99 percent down to 0.1 microns
- Filter life of about five years in normal residential use, with everything in one canister
- Coverage up to 1,500 square feet, airflow up to 400 CFM, three speeds on a manual rotary switch, roughly 40 to 65 decibels
- 360 degree perforated steel intake on caster wheels, so it draws from every side and rolls to wherever the problem is
- No ozone emission, because it is a fan and a filter with nothing generating ozone
- Five year mechanical warranty and five year pro-rated filter warranty, handcrafted in Buffalo, New York
Who it's for
- Newly renovated or newly furnished rooms, where paint, adhesives, flooring and cabinetry are off-gassing
- Wildfire smoke season, and homes near traffic where smog and exhaust get indoors
- Anyone dealing with cigarette or cannabis smoke, or cooking and household chemical odours that a particle filter alone will not touch
Two things to be clear about. The upgrade is entirely in the filter chemistry. The cabinet, the fan, the HEPA, the coverage and the noise are the same as the standard machine, so if gases and chemicals are not your problem you would be paying for capacity you will not use. And the filter is a single sealed canister, so at five years you replace the whole thing rather than a cheap insert. That is a real cost to plan for, and it is the trade for the carbon volume and the long interval.
Living with it
Day to day, nothing. Pick a fan speed and leave it. There is no app, no schedule and no sensor to second-guess.
Then periodically, vacuum the perforated housing so the intake stays clear, and consider a slip-on pre-filter if you have pets or a lot of dust: it catches the coarse material before it loads the main canister and can meaningfully extend its life. During a renovation or a smoke event, run it high and expect the filter to age faster than five years.
FAQs
-
What does the Plus actually add?
Potassium iodide impregnated carbon in the filter blend. Plain activated carbon is good at odours and inconsistent on light gases; the treated carbon adsorbs specific chemicals more effectively, and formaldehyde is the one Austin names because it is small, common in new building materials and hard to capture. Everything else about the machine is identical to the standard version. -
Will it help with wildfire smoke?
It is built for exactly that combination. Smoke is both particles and gases: the HEPA handles the particulate, and the carbon blend handles the smell and the volatile compounds that a particle-only filter passes straight through. Run it on high while the air outside is bad. -
Is it any good for a renovation or new furniture?
That is the main reason people buy this one over the standard machine. New paint, adhesives, engineered flooring and cabinetry off-gas VOCs including formaldehyde for weeks or months, and that is what the treated carbon is specified for. -
How often do I replace the filter?
About five years in normal residential use, and it is one canister containing both pre-filter layers, the carbon blend and the HEPA. Heavy chemical or smoke exposure will shorten that, because the carbon is doing more work. -
How big a room will it handle?
Up to 1,500 square feet, with airflow to 400 CFM. One machine in the affected room does more than several small ones spread around the house. -
Is it quiet enough for a bedroom?
On low, around 40 decibels, comparable to a quiet fan. On high it is closer to 65 and audible. Most owners run it high while a room airs out and low overnight. -
Does it produce ozone?
No. It is a mechanical filter with a fan, so there is nothing in it that generates ozone. Worth checking on anything you compare it against, because ionisers and some UV machines do. -
What is the warranty, and can you service it?
Five years mechanical and five years pro-rated on the filter. We have a Richmond Hill showroom and our own repair department, so if anything needs sorting there is somewhere local to call rather than a support line in another country. Reach us at 1-877-220-5656.
